Friday Morning Shopping

Each Friday morning the senior couples pay a man to take them to various markets around UB.  The cost is $4 per couple per hour.  We decided to go with them this week and pick up a few things to take with us wherever we go.  We have also been told to make sure we have enough food and water stocked up  to get us through the elections in case things get difficult here like the last election.

Anyway, some stores here are similar to the ones at home, meaning you get a cart to put the groceries in and then check out at the front of the store, like the picture above. About anything is available if you want to pay the price.

Other markets are multiple booths operated by multiple vendors.  Each item purchased is paid for at that particular booth.  Below LaNice is purchasing bananas from the fruit vendor.  We didn't buy any meat from the meat counter though.  The only meat we have bought so far is canned tuna.  Meat can also be purchased at the regular market where it is either frozen or at least refrigerated.  I just didn't want to buy anything there because we don't know how long we will be in UB and I didn't want to worry about using it before we left.

Overall it was a good experience.  We got plastic wrap, cheese cloth, garbage bags and other groceries.  I wanted to get some chocolate chips and there is apparently only one place that carries them.  We went there and the package of Nestles chips was 4.5 pounds and cost about $25.  It was a little steep, but we decided it would make a lot of chocolate chip cookies and we wouldn't have them available where we are going, so we bought them anyway.
